If you’re dealing with acne-prone skin, know that you’re not alone. Acne is incredibly common and not just amongst teenagers, but in adults too. It can take a huge hit on your self-confidence and make you feel like hiding away from the world. But, it’s important to know that many people experience it throughout their lives and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Fortunately, there are also a few things you can do to help clear your complexion. Here are our top tips for taking care of acne-prone skin.

Get your skincare sorted

One of the best ways to get rid of pimples is by putting a solid skincare routine in place1. The main steps to include are:

Cleanse: Thoroughly cleanse your face morning and night using a face wash designed for acne-prone skin like Azclear Action Foaming Wash. If you wear makeup, be sure to check that all traces have been removed at the end of the day.

Treat: To help clear existing breakouts, include an acne treatment product like Azclear Action Medicated Lotion. This one takes a two-pronged approach by working to kill acne-causing bacteria while unblocking the oil glands.

Moisturise: If you have oily or acne-prone skin, you may question whether moisturiser is necessary but hydrating the skin is crucial for all skin types. Moisturising helps support the skin’s protective barrier. It also prevents dryness from occurring which is essential as dry, flaky skin can block pores and cause breakouts2.

Stick with your routine

As with many things in life, when it comes to overcoming acne there’s no overnight fix, but if you stick with your skincare routine, over time you should start to see results. If you’re worried you’ll forget, stick a note with a reminder up or place your skincare products in a spot you’ll see them each day – such as next to your toothbrush.

Don’t squeeze spots

When you’ve got a nasty breakout coming through, it can be incredibly tempting to squeeze spots in the hopes of making them disappear… But, picking or pressing zits can actually cause more congestion and can even result in scarring3. Instead of squeezing, apply a treatment. One of the best acne creams is the Azclear Action Medicated Lotion, which we already mentioned above. That said, if you *really* must pop a zit, follow our guide here.

Keep your linen clean

Washing the linen has to be one of the most annoying chores… but we’ve got a stat that will have you racing to throw yours in the wash. One study has alarmingly found that our pillowcases may be home to more bacteria than even the toilet seat4. Eek!

Ensure you’re washing your bedlinen properly each week to avoid any breakout-causing bacteria or grime from building up on your pillowcase. If this seems like too much effort, commit to just washing your pillowcase at least once or twice a week. It’s also important to change and wash your towels at least once a week.

Seek professional advice

If you’ve tried finetuning your skincare routine and aren’t seeing any improvements, or you’re suffering from persistent acne, it might be time to see your doctor. Make an appointment to chat with your GP and ask them to help you devise an acne treatment plan to get things under control.

Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, worsen or change unexpectedly, talk to your health professional.
